Beer of the Week - Biker Beer Lager

In my August Beer of the Month package, there were four bottles of Biker Beer Lager from the Biker-Beer Brewing Company, a Burlington brewery that I have not heard of before. It turns out that the brewery has been around for five years.

Back in 2010 husband and wife team, Trevor and Jan Telford, decided to create a beer aimed at Ontario's motorcycle community. According to Zoom info: Biker-Beer Brewing Company Inc. is to provide a quality beer for those of us who ride motorcycles, and those that wish they did. The large beer manufacturers do not think that the niche market of motorcycle riders is worth developing a brand of beer for ... but we disagree.

According to their Twitter page: The Biker Beer Brewing Company Inc. is trying to raise money to build our own brewery. We need $1,750,000 and are looking for $2 donations. Follow our story.

The problem is that the link to their website on the Twitter page no longer exists and they do not have a Facebook page. The brewery's Twitter page shows as being open in October 2010 but their last tweet is from January 7, 2011. On Untapped, many people are posting up to 18 hours ago that they are drinking a Biker Beer Lager.

According to a 2010 article on Canadian Beer News,  the company was contract brewing out of Nickel Brook Brewing. The LCBO apparently had all kinds of problems with the Biker Beer label and told the owners straight out they would never allow beer with that label to be sold out of their stores. The bottles I received still had the original labeling, which is a label most obviously aimed at the biker market.

And the beer?

It pours a golden colour with a nice white head. Bubbles continually flow up from the bottom of the glass as this is well carbonated. I smell grass or maybe bread in the aroma. I like a bitter bite in a lager, which is why I lean more towards pilsners instead of regular lagers and find this lager a little sweet for my taste buds. Mind you, I will have no problems in drinking the other three bottles.

The Colours of the "Ex" at Night

Teena and I had a great time at the Foghat concert and after made our way home. The Ex is very colourful at night. These turkey legs were tempting but we passed on them.

We had a great night at the Ex. Looking forward to heading back Monday night to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Foghat at the C.N.E.

Tonight Foghat played at the CNE Bandshell. They are a rock band from the seventies, best known for their hit song, Slow Ride. It was, of course their closing song and they rocked it. In fact, the whole concert was great.

It was a great concert. I only knew them for the one song but came away with a greater appreciation for them. I would see them again.

Let's Go to the Ex!

This afternoon Teena and I headed over to what is really Toronto's end of the summer event, the Canadian National Exhibition (aka the CNE, aka The Ex).

There was supposed to be a craft beer and food truck festival this weekend. Teena and I have been to many craft beer festivals in the past and this one really was not.  It was food trucks and craft beer tents in a confusion. Kids were every where and it was set up where everyone who came in through the east gates had to pass through. It was also $2.50 for a 4 oz pour. Pretty pricey.  We weren't digging it and left after just a couple of drinks.

I did have a Sawdust City IPA.

Sudbury now has a brewery, Stack Brewing. I enjoyed their pale ale.

The Sky Ride chair lift is a great way to view the Ex.

I really wasn't enjoying our day until we hit the Northern Comfort Saloon, with lots of country music. 

Ty Baynton was fabulous and really saved the day for me.

 Cory Marquardt was the next act. They were good but we wandered off after their first set.

 

Before Ty Baynton, I was ready to leave. They were great, which meant we stayed around late enough for Foghat. That's in the next post.

My August 2015 Beer of the Month Delivery

About ten minutes after I got home from work, the doorbell rang. I opened to find the postman holding this month's Beer of the Month package from Amazing Clubs. Always exciting!

Each month we'll deliver 12 full-sized bottles of hard-to-find, specialty microbrews from award-winning breweries. Each shipment will include up to four different varieties of premium, hand-crafted beer carefully selected by our experts and brewed in limited quantities by master brewers. We sample hundreds of microbrewed beers every year and only the best-of-the-best become selections of the Beer of the Month Club.

Inside were twelve beers from three breweries and a newsletter describing what I had received along with a recipe and a couple of beer facts.

Here's one of the beer fact: The first six-pack of beer was produced by the Pabst brewery in the 1940s. The brewery conducted numerous studies, which found that six cans were the ideal weight for the average housewife to carry home from the store. Never knew that.

So what did I get?

Four bottles of 1815 Lockstock Ale from Strathroy Brewing Company. I have written about them before. Also included were four bottles of Niagara's Best Belgium Wit,. I have featured another one of their beers before as my Beer of the Week. The third beer has the funniest label and brewery name, Biker Beer Lager from Biker Beer in Burlington, a brewery I have not heard of before.

Can you judge a beer by its label?

I'm looking forward to trying them all!

The Second Annual Indie Boat Hop Craft Beer Cruise

This afternoon Teena and I were on the second annual Indie Boat Hop Craft Beer cruise. We were on it last year and it was a great time. The cruise was aboard the Empress Sandy.

Not that one but this one.

We met up with Teena's pal, Denyse.

Kasie, Denyse, Zeke and me. We met Kasie and Zeke for the first tome today and discovered that they are not only craft beer fans and have been at many of the same events as we have but also live in our neighborhood.

I started with a Great Lakes Brewery and Bar Hop collaboration, Gilligan is Still Dead Saison. It was my first and favorite of the day. I had more.

Teena is ordering a West Avenue Heritage Dry Cider.

Next up was an Amsterdam Howl Saison. It too was quite good.

Today was another fabulous day out on the harbour. Teena and I love boat cruises and when they put craft beer on top of that, what could be better? Great weather, great beer and great people make for a great afternoon.
