Many times over the years, Teena has had to wake me up when I begin making strange sounds, yelling or screaming in the night. Now, this doesn't mean I'm scared to go to bed at night. Quite the contrary as I really love curling under out nice warm blankets, where I fall to sleep almost immediately. </div><div><br /></div><div>It's around 2 or 3 when the horror begins. Me falling. Me trapped on the narrowest of ledges. (I am terrified of heights) Me being chased by a killer. Me being cornered by a killer and about to die. Also many about experiencing nuclear explosions or the end of the world, although it's been a few years since I've experienced any of those.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, this year when the Yoga Show came to Toronto I ventured down with the goal about learning about crystals and how they might help stop or limit these from me waking up terrified or in a cold sweat. It was Resha, the owner of <a href="https://www.zenrox.ca/" target="_blank">Zen Rox</a>. Not only did she have the usual collection of large mounted crystals, she also had some trays of smaller ones which would fit in you hand. When I explained my issues she was quick to show me the two above. The two young women, who went by the names Wâpikwan (wah-pi-kwan: Flower) and Gidagizi Gidagaakoons (ged a gay zay Ged ah ga cones: Spotted Fawn), decided to start a warrior group led by females who would look after and defend the women and children of their bands with the aid of selected male warriors.
That night on the shores of the Salt Lake they tattooed their bodies. The boys with two crossed feathers on their left calves, the girls with the same feathers on their right shoulders. The feathers signified the strength of the sexes held together and led by women.
They named their group in the Ani-shi-na-abe language Omashkooz Gwiishkoshim Ogichidaa (o mush koos gwish ko shim o gich e dah) and in Cree they were called Wâwâskêsiw Kwêskosîwin Nôtinkêwiýiniw. In the gichi-mookomaan (white man''s) tongue they are known as the Elk Whistle Warrior Society. </i><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>This is contemporary story with historic roots. It takes place in modern times</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Stepped in history, it's a story of revenge and justice set in today's world. This year it was <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/Bottom-33rd-Redemption-Baseballs-Longest/dp/0062014498" target="_blank">Bottom of the 33rd</a>, about the longest game in baseball history.<br /><p></p><i>On April 18, 1981, a ball game sprang eternal. For eight hours, the night seemed to suspend a town and two teams between their collective pasts and futures, between their collective sorrows and joys—the shivering fans; their wives at home; the umpires; the batboys approaching manhood; the ejected manager, peering through a hole in the backstop; the sportswriters and broadcasters; and the players themselves—two destined for the Hall of Fame (Cal Ripken and Wade Boggs), the few to play only briefly or forgettably in the big leagues, and the many stuck in minor-league purgatory, duty bound and loyal forever to the game. </i><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>With Bottom of the 33rd, Barry delivers a lyrical meditation on small-town lives, minor-league dreams, and the elements of time and community that conspired one fateful night to produce a baseball game seemingly without end. An unforgettable portrait of ambition and endurance, Bottom of the 33rd is the rare sports book that changes the way we perceive America’s pastime—and America’s past</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>I remember hearing about this game the morning after it happened, so reading about it was fun. Some big names were in that game, too. Cal Ripken Jr, Wade Boggs, Bruce Hurst, who all went on to be superstars. </div><div><br /></div><div>So how do you fill a book about a single ball game. With back stories of the players and others involved in the game. Surprising how interesting most of them were.</div><div><br /></div><div>This is a must read for every baseball fan out there. </div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-76878581934342026512023-03-08T09:20:00.004-05:002023-03-08T09:20:48.310-05:00At The End Of It All: Stories From The Shadows by Suzanne Craig-Whytock<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6JGLgCX6RoMWITcEkq80Poe1QYFmtruN8te0947cRBwLDHWBk8SH6BRbq-yQKlDbm1inwb4ZWy92ka2gupjfsJjOk0afozx65EaByj1K7llidlh7uYAYEjxJpYaCGTPIRc5uV9Yy7BtpurBkzypnAJkq1B3oRUCMI_XLsGLz67Fw8bZeLo0nqUvEQ/s2560/73524853.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2560" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6JGLgCX6RoMWITcEkq80Poe1QYFmtruN8te0947cRBwLDHWBk8SH6BRbq-yQKlDbm1inwb4ZWy92ka2gupjfsJjOk0afozx65EaByj1K7llidlh7uYAYEjxJpYaCGTPIRc5uV9Yy7BtpurBkzypnAJkq1B3oRUCMI_XLsGLz67Fw8bZeLo0nqUvEQ/s320/73524853.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>I just finished reading <a href="https://www.amazon.ca/At-End-All-Stories-Shadows/dp/1951840631" target="_blank">At The End Of It All: Stories From The Shadows</a> by Suzanne Craig-Whytock.<br /><p></p><i>Enter a surreal landscape of the twisted and unusual. Pauline Johnson, Tekahionwake by Charlotte Gray<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkszoL-XufgHCdYQCzYBs52tda_sW2soIzC57Qn4XuH-OfttuSKLyxFivgxkq8mqf0SRnM_QmNIwyKoc6Y0QOIgufcXtXRadIDpHCyT_aT75-hL2lbl8ovyrOgcg_sbAqdGGI4VlcpufSfcdFGh3__5AP0vS0BLpZNYwqURL7AjJXfBWU8Nshj6rs7/s469/909107.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="469" data-original-width="318" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkszoL-XufgHCdYQCzYBs52tda_sW2soIzC57Qn4XuH-OfttuSKLyxFivgxkq8mqf0SRnM_QmNIwyKoc6Y0QOIgufcXtXRadIDpHCyT_aT75-hL2lbl8ovyrOgcg_sbAqdGGI4VlcpufSfcdFGh3__5AP0vS0BLpZNYwqURL7AjJXfBWU8Nshj6rs7/s320/909107.jpg" width="217" /></a></div>I think I was in grade 4 or 5 when our teacher told us about the famed Canadian poet, Pauline Johnson. Her story intrigued me. A Mohawk poet who, not only travelled across Canada, but also traveled to England a few times performing. When I saw Charlotte Gray's newest history work, Flint and Feather, it reignited my interest in her and, of course, had to read it. <div><br /><div><i>A graceful biography that was a #1 national bestseller, Flint & Feather confirms Charlotte Gray’s position as a master biographer, a writer with a rare gift for transforming a historical character into a living, breathing woman who immediately captures our imagination.</i><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>In Flint & Feather, Charlotte Gray explores the life of this nineteenth-century daughter of a Mohawk chief and English gentlewoman, creating a fascinating portrait of a young woman equally at home on the stage in her “Indian” costume and in the salons of the rich and powerful. Uncovering Pauline Johnson’s complex and dramatic personality, Flint & Feather is studded with triumph and tragedy, mystery and romance—a first-rate biography blending turn-of-the-century Canadian history and the vibrant story of a woman whose unforgettable voice still echoes through the years</i>.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Pauline Johnson was not just a renowned poet, but was also well know for her eclectic performances. As she was of mixed heritage, Mohawk and English, she create an act which would highlight both sides of her roots. In one act she would dress in her authentic aboriginal garb and recite her poems about canoeing and aboriginal stories she heard or grew up on. </div><div><br /></div><div>In the second act, she would dress as an English debutant with poems regarding the upper English lifestyle she had experienced. It was the two different styles, all in one performance which kept people filling the seats of theater everywhere.</div><div><br /></div><div>Gray does and excellent job in telling the story of her life. Her successes and pitfalls. Her constant state of being poor and in debt, even though she was constantly performing. The reader can see the extensive research which went into Gray's work. It's a tale worth reading. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-63583297262361742232023-02-18T12:23:00.000-05:002023-02-18T12:23:30.414-05:00heart strings by Clarice Goetz<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU2k7FejTq6PGn_fdeyRJyS27qvC3g5k8kCxHubmbrDFA-cI1p-nypsdvcnS2Zxc-QVk9mkA4WuZaJkDniJa-KKLHQirt0SFxVEqD62x-tO5tBiCf40oK-AcswLZgI5-VHq3uAwbJbPSlB4AKN9VVfozzo9DA4SHsRS6555qQk-qOpBoUPM-KFUPbn/s807/56211883.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="807" data-original-width="538" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU2k7FejTq6PGn_fdeyRJyS27qvC3g5k8kCxHubmbrDFA-cI1p-nypsdvcnS2Zxc-QVk9mkA4WuZaJkDniJa-KKLHQirt0SFxVEqD62x-tO5tBiCf40oK-AcswLZgI5-VHq3uAwbJbPSlB4AKN9VVfozzo9DA4SHsRS6555qQk-qOpBoUPM-KFUPbn/s320/56211883.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>I just finished reading, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56211883-heart-strings" target="_blank">heart strings</a>, a poetry collection by Canadian poet, Clarice Goetz.<br /><p></p><i>In her debut collection, heart strings, Clarice Goetz delivers emotionally candid poetry and prose that detail the aftermath of a significant heartbreak. With original, evocative illustrations, this melancholy narrative is written through the many stages of loss, and the tethers that bind us to those we've lost.
Let the words meet you wherever you are. </i><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Let its pages be a place of comfort — a hug in book form. Let it heal your heart, and bring you back home to yourself</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>The poems in <i>heart strings</i> are clearly about a woman who's long time relationship has ended. Goetz is heartbroken and throughout the book is working through her feelings. You can see her improvement as the book goes on.</div><div><br /></div><div>I don't usually read poetry, but as I'm currently also reading a biography on Pauline Johnson, it put me in a mood for this book. Mind you, I would only read 4-5 a day as any more, I found, would cause my mind to wander.</div><div><br /></div><div>Goetz's poetry is beautiful, and emotional. The drawings which accompany many of her poems were also done by the author. If you enjoy poetry, you'll enjoy <i>heart strings</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div> </div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-18975534364611929962023-02-17T09:44:00.003-05:002023-02-17T09:44:51.702-05:00Silverview by John le Carré<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOyMJU7cO7zh7F8zY4x6u-XRT2g8N-mpyLdIjiZoefjlU4gbH7jPxMlNQRMTC9NwTB2E52-O5-UBfnIYBDzaaV7kvduYIhTR5K9qJe6AgX6Y95XKy383KLs-cVmskVM33uviLJqwsa42dUyJg3C2gSOf4_Mo7kM0yaCceA_w1qPY8pLokvGGidK_3H/s500/58111873.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="331" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOyMJU7cO7zh7F8zY4x6u-XRT2g8N-mpyLdIjiZoefjlU4gbH7jPxMlNQRMTC9NwTB2E52-O5-UBfnIYBDzaaV7kvduYIhTR5K9qJe6AgX6Y95XKy383KLs-cVmskVM33uviLJqwsa42dUyJg3C2gSOf4_Mo7kM0yaCceA_w1qPY8pLokvGGidK_3H/s320/58111873.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><p></p><div>I just finished reading Silverview by British author, John le Carré. </div><div><br /></div><div><i>Julian Lawndsley has renounced his high-flying job in the City for a simpler life running a bookshop in a small English seaside town. Marie, a gifted healer of the Deer Clan, does not want to marry the green-eyed soldier from France who has asked for her hand. But her people are threatened by disease and starvation and need help against the Iroquois and their English allies if they are to survive. When her chief begs her to accept the white man’s proposal, she cannot refuse him, and sheds her deerskin tunic for a borrowed blue wedding dress to become Pierre’s bride.
1675. </i><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Jeanne, Marie’s oldest child, is seventeen, neither white nor Algonquin, caught between worlds. Caught by her own desires, too. Her heart belongs to a girl named Josephine, but soon her father will have to find her a husband or be forced to pay a hefty fine to the French crown. Among her mother’s people, Jeanne would have been considered blessed, her two-spirited nature a sign of special wisdom. To the settlers of New France, and even to her own father, Jeanne is unnatural, sinful—a woman to be shunned, beaten, and much worse. </i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i> With the poignant, unforgettable story of Marie and Jeanne, Danielle Daniel reaches back through the centuries to touch the very origin of the long history of violence against Indigenous women and the deliberate, equally violent disruption of First Nations cultures</i>.
</div><div><br /></div><div>This is a powerful, heartfelt story which, many times, left me bitter when I set the book down after reading a few chapters. Danielle Daniel does an excellent job telling the story and in the authors notes at the end, explains how emotionally hard it was to write this fictional tale of a people, the Algonkin (as spelled by the author in the book) who she has which ancestral links to. </div><div><br /></div><div>I can why this book is a national best seller.</div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-5070371167228232072023-01-19T19:13:00.095-05:002023-01-20T10:50:14.526-05:00Weight Watchers Style Chicken Curry<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTdh4rOztdyiT9lIpLCxJUQvT1mFVnKcuQctzHHx2WKw_iQ5F0SNlpxwouDvV-LrTyrt8CDAwTJdM1ka4-fxUDck4Q6Xb02iGBHdyk3Ohand2vDQfqbf49xfylikUQjCI4XvUWZIevfrIhnZCBhPvj1NzciNY7nsi6bx6VHGX7sSx0CEl2YZ-yt399/s4032/017.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTdh4rOztdyiT9lIpLCxJUQvT1mFVnKcuQctzHHx2WKw_iQ5F0SNlpxwouDvV-LrTyrt8CDAwTJdM1ka4-fxUDck4Q6Xb02iGBHdyk3Ohand2vDQfqbf49xfylikUQjCI4XvUWZIevfrIhnZCBhPvj1NzciNY7nsi6bx6VHGX7sSx0CEl2YZ-yt399/s320/017.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /> Tonight, I made Teena and I Chicken Curry. He was a photographer of the revolution, but now finds himself unemployed and addicted to cocaine, living in a rooftop shack. She is a nostalgic daughter of immigrants “returning” to a country she’s never been to before, teaching English and living in a light-filled flat with balconies on all sides. They fall in love and he moves in. But soon their desire—for one another, for the selves they want to become through the other—takes a violent turn that neither of them expected</i>.
<div><br /></div><div>This is a uniquely written novel about a destructive relationship between a man and a woman. The story is told from two different points of view. The first is a woman, who's name is not given. She was born in Egypt, grew up and was educated in the U.S. before moving back to Cairo. The other is an unnamed boy who grew up in a small impoverished Egyptian village. </div><div><br /></div><div>I found it confusing at first, as the dialogue flips back and forth, and there are times I had to really a few paragraphs to know who was speaking but after 20 or so pages, I became familiar with the flow.</div><div><br /></div><div>Throughout, I found the story interesting and wanted to keep reading. It reads differently from anything else I have ever read and part three really twists the readers imagination. Not for every taste, but a book I enjoyed.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-27583707984777712202022-12-17T19:11:00.004-05:002022-12-17T19:11:42.202-05:00Gord's Bullsh*t Curry<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivZ16BYzX9-zpD4JBpFm_jsnQEFG3Y5G_RekyVr4wG4Se33y5vdM7qinYNJ-VhJsW0eJ5e3rzurbbsZHW6Xcd7A1VysdNqDKgxZvopGz4uhPHQwrPW3RbW3cdR3JjmP4j10Aqi-qfXFywmqJP6qciXF6Dhfw69WLO2Mm1y26ITOlw2J_QYNb9NMcye/s538/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="403" data-original-width="538" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivZ16BYzX9-zpD4JBpFm_jsnQEFG3Y5G_RekyVr4wG4Se33y5vdM7qinYNJ-VhJsW0eJ5e3rzurbbsZHW6Xcd7A1VysdNqDKgxZvopGz4uhPHQwrPW3RbW3cdR3JjmP4j10Aqi-qfXFywmqJP6qciXF6Dhfw69WLO2Mm1y26ITOlw2J_QYNb9NMcye/w400-h300/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>One of my new years goals is to learn to enjoy curry. Teena loves them. I avoid them but admittedly, have made a couple of mild curries which. I liked. So perhaps, maybe it's time to experiment with this multi-national dish.</p><p>Thinking along these lines, I promised Teena I would make us a curry for Saturday supper. This was on Wednesday, so I didn't have much time to find a recipe and shop. After some online searching, I finally found one. Astonishingly, it was on the Campbells soup website, called <a href="https://www.cookwithcampbells.ca/recipe/chicken-curry-in-a-hurry/?gclid=CjwKCAiA7vWcBhBUEiwAXieItiUUbQOUtRa9AjC_iyMo79oIy38zAR908exYFTk908ZwHZvFLCDSaBoCAvgQAvD_BwE" target="_blank">Chicken Curry in a Hurry</a>. So when a cache of whisky labeled Bailey Brothers’ Best is unearthed during a local home renovation, Cassie hopes to find the answers she’s been searching for about the legendary family of bootleggers... </i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>1918 </i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Corporal Jeremiah Bailey of the 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company is tasked with planting mines in the tunnels beneath enemy trenches. After Jerry is badly wounded in an explosion, he finds himself in a Belgium field hospital under the care of Adele Savard, one of Canada’s nursing sisters, nicknamed “Bluebirds” for their blue gowns and white caps. As Jerry recovers, he forms a strong connection with Adele, who is from a place near his hometown of Windsor, along the Detroit River. In the midst of war, she’s a welcome reminder of home, and when Jerry is sent back to the front, he can only hope that he’ll see his bluebird again. </i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i> By war’s end, both Jerry and Adele return home to Windsor, scarred by the horrors of what they endured overseas. When they cross paths one day, they have a chance to start over. But the city is in the grip of Prohibition, which brings exciting opportunities as well as new dangerous conflicts that threaten to destroy everything they have fought for</i>.
</div><div><br /></div><div>Bluebird is an excellently written, and obviously, well researched historical fiction. The story bounces back and forth from the present day to the past throughout but in an unconfusing way. When the past is written about, it is done in chronological order, as is the events of the present. </div><div><br /></div><div>I really enjoyed the writing style and the stories plot and would not hesitate to read another one of her many novels.</div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-18584867881650639672022-11-27T09:31:00.001-05:002022-11-27T09:31:25.761-05:00I Was Never Here: My True Canadian Spy Story of Coffees, Code Names, and Covert Operations in the Age of Terrorism by Andrew Kirsch<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9l5LSvFDdIoBwvUR_UbqqZrlaqry9cCfd869rTPxIEnzwpgQ7nnaxFKaxdxnFdIOk9R4T4jC6F3ud1AEz3ES40YLo3vUBMAWBzHGMdmYGF78yKQvy4F36gCGX3lgRk1e_gOXtERE3j2yKK3Nmd2QfK3AAKSt4fOcTNBUX7fk2WNyTv_u9IIZ7i0lD/s400/58127599.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="267" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9l5LSvFDdIoBwvUR_UbqqZrlaqry9cCfd869rTPxIEnzwpgQ7nnaxFKaxdxnFdIOk9R4T4jC6F3ud1AEz3ES40YLo3vUBMAWBzHGMdmYGF78yKQvy4F36gCGX3lgRk1e_gOXtERE3j2yKK3Nmd2QfK3AAKSt4fOcTNBUX7fk2WNyTv_u9IIZ7i0lD/s320/58127599.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>Today I finished <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58127599-i-was-never-here" target="_blank">I Was Never Here</a>, by former CSIS spy, Andrew Kirsch, which possibly is his real name. Proudly this is the 30th book I have read this year, surpassing my previous reading record of 29 books, set in 2011 and 2020. <p></p><i>Andrew Kirsch didn’t grow up watching spy movies, or dreaming about being a real-life James Bond. He was hardly aware that Canada even had its own intelligence service—let alone knew what its officers did. But when a terrorist attack occurred near the office of his financial services job, all of a sudden fighting terrorism meant a lot more to him than the markets. Within 18 months he had landed a job with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS)—where he spent the next decade of his life.<br />
<br />
In I Was Never Here, Kirsch (now an in-demand security consultant) spills the secrets of what life as an intelligence officer is really like, and dispels a few myths along the way. With humour, honesty, and candour, Kirsch shares his on-the-ground experience (or as much of it as he’s allowed to) of becoming a member of CSIS: from his vetting and training, to his initial desk job as a policy analyst, to his rise up the ranks to leading covert special operations missions. If you’ve ever wondered whether spies can have real dating lives, how they handle family responsibilities, or how they come up with cover stories or aliases, you’re in luck.<br />
<br />
From the time he tried to get the code names “Burgundy” and “Anchorman” assigned to human sources (with no luck), to the night a covert operation was almost thwarted by a flyer delivery man, Kirsch takes you behind the scenes with an authentic view of Canada’s spy agency, and the intricate intelligence-sharing apparatus that works day and night to keep us safe. I Was Never Here is also a testament to one man’s drive to serve his country, and the sacrifices, big and small, that he made along the way</i>.<br /><div><br /></div><div>I always wondered what the mandate for CSIS was vs that of the RCMP. This book explains it. CSIS really has a first look at any possible threat to Canada, including foreign espionage, theft of secrets and, of course most prominently, terrorism.</div><div><br /></div><div>Even though Kirsch could not go into great detail, it was interesting reading, hearing the day to day operations he was a part of. No dirt. No inside scandal, just he job they did. There were some funny tales of some jobs which had issues, interesting midnight jobs and how his life with CSIS affected his life outside of it.</div><div><br /></div><div>It's a book, I quite enjoyed.</div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-21463201100560664262022-11-19T18:29:00.035-05:002022-11-20T13:45:16.017-05:00Predators and Prey Book Launch<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidb8g10ba1c-Nv2KNZBzzOGT8osjI35z0GjIBALdbNJ_iuXiqPeOO1iF_XAzlzxDxFUBsY_Av_scr91sIhsifn30Mi7hknfCD_Ik1z3CnUY5s2L5y8FUXzbbWdP2WAblLb0SjrTnu2fXBWTY05Ph5mFhpeoOBQ3p5s2KoaMaraRMDXAhKwVjGvT8ad/s4032/009.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidb8g10ba1c-Nv2KNZBzzOGT8osjI35z0GjIBALdbNJ_iuXiqPeOO1iF_XAzlzxDxFUBsY_Av_scr91sIhsifn30Mi7hknfCD_Ik1z3CnUY5s2L5y8FUXzbbWdP2WAblLb0SjrTnu2fXBWTY05Ph5mFhpeoOBQ3p5s2KoaMaraRMDXAhKwVjGvT8ad/w400-h300/009.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div>This afternoon was the official book launch of my crime novel, <a href="https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/predators-and-prey/9781772311655-item.html?ikwid=predators+and+Prey&ikwsec=Home&ikwidx=0#algoliaQueryId=eaf347e0e77b33d7fb7413b1fca217bb" target="_blank">Predators and Prey</a>, which took place at my favorite Toronto Restaurant, the <a href="https://localpubliceatery.com/neighbourhoods/liberty-village/" target="_blank">Local Public Eatery</a> in Liberty Village. </div><div><br /></div><div>I loved the sign they posted on their rotating board. All the residents’ cars were sent to the mainland and for the past month the islanders have been “driving” the Arrival, a revolutionary autonomous vehicle. With a simple voice command, an Arrival will take you wherever you want to go and, because the fleet is networked and aware of one another, car travel is now 100% safe. The future, it seems, has arrived.<br />
<br />
As the excitement reaches a fever pitch, Sandra Montrose – islander, single mom, and public relations executive – prepares for Arrival Inc.’s flashy press event. Sandra is more than ready for this new world. Her husband died after falling asleep at the wheel and she’s relieved that her two teens, Archie and Katie, will never need driver’s licenses.<br />
<br />
But as the celebratory day gets underway, disaster strikes. A visiting journalist has vanished, possibly murdered. Before long, the Arrivals run amok, no longer taking orders from their passengers. They’re starting to organize. They’re beginning to hunt. And they seem hell-bent on killing any human they encounter.<br />
<br />
Is this all just a tragic accident, a technological malfunction with deadly consequences? Or were the vehicles programmed to act this way in a cruel act of corporate sabotage? Or could it be that the Arrivals have a mind of their own?</i><br /><div><i><br /></i></div><div>This novel is a departure from the usual books which Barclay writes .... and it's excellent. Reads like a horror story. Picture Stephen King's, Christine, but where thousands of cars are out to kill. If that's not bad enough, the residents all live on an island with no way to escape.</div><div><br /></div><div>A gripping, exciting novel, one of Barclay's best. One day she announces that she can't clear away her colleagues' dirty cups--because she's pregnant and the smell nauseates her. The only thing is . . . Ms. Shibata is not pregnant.<br />
<br />
Pregnant Ms. Shibata doesn't have to serve coffee to anyone. Pregnant Ms. Shibata isn't forced to work overtime. Pregnant Ms. Shibata rests, watches TV, takes long baths, and even joins an aerobics class for expectant mothers. But pregnant Ms. Shibata also has a nine-month ruse to keep up. Helped along by towel-stuffed shirts and a diary app on which she can log every stage of her "pregnancy," she feels prepared to play the game for the long haul. When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they've been marked for death.<br />

They bought me a straw hat which I clamped onto my head and never took off. I've been wearing a hat ever since. So, when I saw Hat Talk by American author, Debbie Henderson, in <a href="https://beauchapeau.com/" target="_blank">BeauChapeau Hat Shop</a> in Niagara on the Lake, I just had to have it. Never walked out of there with a book instead of a new hat before. <br /><br /><div><i>Subtitled "Conversations with Hat Makers about their hats -- the Fedora, Homburg, Straw and Cap", the author delves into the history of hats through the very personal visions of those who lived hats all their lives.
This focus enables her to examine how of some of the best known hat companies founded and maintained their activities, their fashion leadership and their national and international commercial roles</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>It's an interesting read about the the hat industry in North America, from the very early days of hat making and felt processing, to modern times. </div><div><br /></div><div>The book describes how the decline of the hat followed the popularity of the automobile. When people ask me why I wear a hat, I always answer by saying it's to keep the weather off my head. Turns out, that was the reason men and women did back then, but when the car came along and more and more people were driving, the car's roof protected them instead.</div><div><br /></div><div>I was surprised by how the film, <i>Urban Cowboy</i>, from the 80's popularized the wearing of hats. Production of hats ramped up causing some companies to flourish, some to prolong their lives and brought others into bankruptcy.</div><div><br /></div><div>For anyone who enjoys wearing a hat, this is an excellent book to read. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-72084889660625362002022-10-10T10:10:00.001-04:002022-10-10T10:10:25.685-04:00Rebel by Rahaf Mohammed<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv0d1bsGQ7cXHJwDGZ20SKpG3pYTJZnt9MrbpC4O6j16gH9zt0W5UynqCma3NiJ01SydGH3nSFnUmZ1mmPDmM2vvuBFDjGgY_56nPmv9jbcyWzFsYgcJr8u0WF-Tajkkrptww6dqb46Br9PcFt9dsepYDT-Y7X_aqfNzxb0bCp9hYIyJ03F7hj-F9T/s400/60245196.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="265" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv0d1bsGQ7cXHJwDGZ20SKpG3pYTJZnt9MrbpC4O6j16gH9zt0W5UynqCma3NiJ01SydGH3nSFnUmZ1mmPDmM2vvuBFDjGgY_56nPmv9jbcyWzFsYgcJr8u0WF-Tajkkrptww6dqb46Br9PcFt9dsepYDT-Y7X_aqfNzxb0bCp9hYIyJ03F7hj-F9T/s320/60245196.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>I just finished reading, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60245196-rebel?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=Q794MzVWzS&rank=1" target="_blank">Rebel</a>, by Rahaf Mohammed.<div> <br /><i>A gripping memoir of bravery and sacrifice by a young woman whose escape from her abusive family and an oppressive culture in Saudi Arabia captivated the world.<br />
<br />
In early 2019, after three years of careful planning, Rahaf Mohammed finally escaped her abusive family in Saudi Arabia—but made it only to Bangkok before being stripped of her passport. If forced to return home, she was sure she would be killed, like other rebel women in her country. As men pounded at the door of her barricaded hotel room, she opened a Twitter account. The teenager reached out to the world, and the world answered—she gained 45,000 followers in one day, and those followers helped her seek asylum in the West.<br />
<br />
Now Rahaf Mohammed tells her remarkable story in her own words, revealing untold truths about life in the closed kingdom, where young women are brought up in a repressive system that puts them under the legal control of a male guardian. Raised with immense financial privilege but under the control of her male relatives—including her high-profile politician father—she endured an abusive childhood in which oppression and deceit were the norm.<br />
<br />
Moving from Rahaf’s early days on the underground online network of Saudi runaways, who use coded entries to learn how to flee the brutalities of their homeland, to her solo escape to Canada, Rebel is a breathtaking and life-affirming memoir about one woman’s tenacious pursuit of freedom</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Rebel is a well written account of the author's horrifying life growing up in Saudi Arabia and her subsequent escape to Canada. She really shows the oppressive, brutal life life Saudi women are subject to. </div><div><br /></div><div>I remember seeing on the news Chrystia Freeland, our Deputy Prime Minister, welcoming Rahaf at the airport upon her arrival, but not knowing the background of why. Now I know. In light of her story and what is currently happening in Iran, I feel this is an important book to read. </div><div><br /></div><div>I'm glad she found her way to Canada.</div>Swordsmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04895147482835719236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433963637381470700.post-2258555461227736252022-10-08T12:48:00.004-04:002022-10-08T12:48:42.712-04:00Predators and Prey Now at Bookstores and Online<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3TeQUqDGV4X4nBZmbmcNqE_Ns5U8lOSf9a1nF9-5InZmvgS9Lk6sb5oEaVlEx5HEKeXco5pRq0aK5YXBCx4jyWv1nObGmShHdh4qH4s-MgV2z4x4bXXjBG7jKRFC0_NmWel7dYRNrBpEXmgvRw7CB0azepGXyiWf6lDQNX1NGcYLc2EvUdqIEaIGh/s400/9781772311655-d74144a13b9bd9b1fe5bf5.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="259" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3TeQUqDGV4X4nBZmbmcNqE_Ns5U8lOSf9a1nF9-5InZmvgS9Lk6sb5oEaVlEx5HEKeXco5pRq0aK5YXBCx4jyWv1nObGmShHdh4qH4s-MgV2z4x4bXXjBG7jKRFC0_NmWel7dYRNrBpEXmgvRw7CB0azepGXyiWf6lDQNX1NGcYLc2EvUdqIEaIGh/s320/9781772311655-d74144a13b9bd9b1fe5bf5.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>On October 6, 2022, Predators and Prey was published by Bookland Press. Trophy killing for sport? Trent Corbett finally had enough of seeing Facebook posts showing African big game hunters, their long-range rifles in hand, kneeling proudly by their kill. The outraged comments below the photos were not enough. It was time for him to do something about it. </i><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>His solution? Hunt the hunters. Kill them in their own neighborhoods, just like the hunters kill lions, elephants, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros in theirs.<br />

Soon local police discover they have a serial killer on their hands. Led by Police Chief Avery Johnson, small town police forces unite in an effort to stop the man who calls himself the Predator's Predator before his death count rises further</i>.
