Movie Review - Battleship

In my review of The Avengers, I said that it seemed the theme for the weekend would be big, loud movie weekend. This afternoon it was Battleship.

An action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro's classic naval combat game, "Battleship" stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper's fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper's older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper's crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone's superior (and Sam's father), Admiral Shane.

Basically you get what you expect. I had most of the subplots figured out in the first 15 minutes but it was a fun movie. There were intentional funny moments and, what I`m sure the movie makers would consider, unintentional funny moments.

I expected more of aliens shelling cities than there were but for a movie made out of a boardgame that we once played using graph paper, they did a pretty good job.

The acting was pretty good. Most of the actors I have not heard of. Liam Neeson added some credibility to the movie by being in it, I might not have gone otherwise, and I thought Rihanna did a good job playing kick-ass Petty Officer Raikes.

It is big and loud and I am happy that I saw it on the big screen. I give it a 6/10
